Allegations of illegal duck hunting at the close of Victoria’s shooting season are under investigation following the release of activist footage.

The Coalition Against Duck Shooting has shared footage which it says shows duck hunters using an airboat to hunt native water birds at Cundare Pool, west of Geelong, on Monday, against Game Management Authority rules.

“Duck hunters (were) using an airboat to terrorise native water birds so that they could take to the sky and fly around in a confused manner, which would make it easier for duck hunters to shoot them down,” the coalition’s Gonzalo Villanueva told AAP on Tuesday.

The Game Management Authority confirmed it was looking into allegations of “people allegedly illegally herding birds towards hunters with the aid of an airboat” and said appropriate action will be taken against anyone found to have behaved illegally.

Victoria’s duck hunting season began in mid-March and finished on Monday.

The release of the footage comes months after the government flagged a possible overhaul or dumping of the Game Management Authority following a report detailing widespread non-compliance by hunters.

Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford in March said additional compliance measures had been put in place for the 2018 season, alongside regulations to make it easier to detect hunters doing the wrong thing.
